I had to share this latest creation with you as the inspiration for this cake came to me way back in September as I began seeing all sorts of decorations and cards start to pop up.

I love tradition and adore classical designs but we pride ourselves at Sugar High on being able to push the envelope in terms of taking something traditional and funking it up (see our Scuba and Rock climbing cakes).

Instead of decorating a fruit cake for the recipient in our usual way – we wanted to create a striking centrepiece for the table that could be enjoyed with a cup of tea after Christmas Dinner.

In a house that will be flooded with Children expectant to see what Santa will leave for them under the tree and with the hosts having the best collection of Christmas toys, lights and figurines I have ever seen – I had to raise the bar on what to present them with.

Needless to say, they love it and are already talking about where it is going to be placed on Christmas Day.

I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed creating it . I had so much fun.

As with all of our cakes – 99% is edible with only some internal supports that cant be eaten.

Sugar High Cakes was very proud to announce the addition of classes to the business repertoire and has enjoyed getting to teach, demonstrate and encourage all of our participants.

We take a slightly different approach to our classes, tailoring them to suit each group and we come to you to make the time spent together less formal and more fun.

Recently we have enjoyed some Christmas classes and a workshops for different types of groups but the consensus has been tht everyone has had a great time and were proud to take their creations home.

A Steinway Baby Grand set up for playing. I was beside myself with excitement as the birthday girl had no idea what was coming and with only a few weeks to plan – i was in for a busy time.

The vision for the cake was that it needed to be realistic and as true to life as I could manage so I contacted a very clever woodworking friend to help me put together the boards.

Once I had all of the hardware together (for the piano and the stool) I set about carving and shaping the cake.

I spent a bit of time researching the Steinway family of pianos and set about putting the keyboard, pedals and stool together.

I wanted a ‘carpet’ look to the board and the green matched some of the tableware at the party so was perfect.

As with all of our cakes – it was 99% edible as only the legs of the piano and stool were wood – the piano, lid, pedals, stand and ribs inside the piano were all munched up by the guests and family.

The Birthday girl was very excited and this is what she had to say.

“Everyone who  saw the piano cake was speechless.  Such attention to detail, down to the Steinway crest, the quilted piano stool and the pins for the piano strings shows love, as well as skill and commitment.

We regret the vandalism necessary to access the delicious marbled mud cake.  Congratulations, clever Channah, caterer and cake artist extraordinaire”.

A replica Steinway baby grand piano created for a 60th Birthday. Everything on the piano was edible,  except for the legs.

“When we decided to have a rock climbing wedding (as in, abseiling down a cliff to the ceremony, then climbing out afterwards), we never expected that the theme could continue to a wedding cake!

But then along came Chan the Cake Guru who said, ‘I will make you a cake and not just any cake, but a rock climbing cake’.

“Sure, that would be awesome”  we said, and expected a lovely cake with a couple of rock climbers in wedding attire perched on top.

What we saw on the cake table after we climbed out of our ceremony and walked on air to our reception was something that had to be seen to be believed! There was a beautiful, perfectly iced,  classic wedding cake in three tiers, with some climber’s rope around each layer. Gorgeous. But then, “look on the other side”, we were urged by the crowd that had gathered in awe.

And then we realised the other side of the cake was actually a cliff face! A cliff face complete with moss and rocks and two climbers – a bride and a groom wearing the same clothing as us, along with climbing harnesses – scaling that cliff!

UNBELIEVABLE!

We were stunned then and remain stunned months later. It was a pity to cut the cake but it was worth it. The tri-flavours – white chocolate, chocolate and red velvet were delightly and made a brilliant addition to the fruit platters for dessert. Photos of our very classy (not at all crass) rock climbing cake made the media – the Illawarra Mercury and some climbing and adventure magazines.

They are both scuba divers and the groom is also a diving instructor so I knew from the outset it was going to be amazing.

After a few emails and brunches we came up with the basic design but I had a couple of ideas to make it really exciting. The hardest part was keeping the surprises from the bride, but i’m sure glad I did.

To get the cake as true to life as possible I had them send me some photos of dives they had been on and I started from there to create things you may find on a reef dive.

This cake suited the Scuba Diving couple perfectly. It was by far one of the most fun creations to date. Traditional at the front, funky at the back. With extra surprises for the Bride and Groom.

We can’t reveal too much just yet, but thought we should share a little sneak preview. Stay tuned for the full details of this very exciting cake.

With the use of both 2 and 3 dimensional decorations, it was well received by friends and family alike.
